From the late 70′s, these two company giants dominated the industry like no others.
But not necessarily in the same field.
Apple primary focus was over the computer hardware. IBM or “Big Blue” turned down the idea of the familly downsized computer. Giving family access to computers for personal use created the “PC”. This idea was new and ridiculed because no one really believed that there would ever be a functional use for a pc of that size and computers were also seen as a complex piece of equipment that the average family could not comprehend.
There was a missing piece for this equation and it would become Microsoft to fill the gap.
Microsoft, starting out as a Applications company was given the opportunity of making the Mac 2 user friendly and providing a more functional software.
I believe (from my own personal experience) the popularity and success of Apple rises from the early computers it produced, especially in the 90′s. In primary and elementary school, I remembered using these computers over and over and thats all I ever knew. With today’s Apple, the success comes from that heritage. Apple wanted the loyal customer to say “hey I remember this at a younger age, the controls are all the same but the computer has more functions within it now.” Take the bicycle for example, its been around for years and now they’ve changed the look of it, some have become more functional than others but the overall concept is the same. The designs are flawless and almost second to none. Today people know that if you’ve got an “iphone” or “itouch”, “ipad”, or “itunes”, you have the newest, baddest item out there.
Microsoft started different and I believe carries on a different goal. From the beginning with Windows, it just seemed to have more of a business type of use. All the programs that Windows designed and carries from Word, Excel, Powerpoint, well, it all seems like a use that for any occassion is professional and ultimately structured for presentation. Microsoft has not changed this delivery of programs to the user but it has changed the user perspective. From Windows XP to Vista, it seems like Windows is making the PC available in the sense that the average person, family member, man, woman, and child can access their PC and say “My life is just as important for these programs and they are just as easy to use” or in shorter terms, “user friendly.” The designs for Microsoft carriers is an A but Apple takes the cake. However, for gaming, no other console has rocked the foundation of video games like the Xbox and being a gamer myself, I backed that up 100% and with products like the Xbox, it really shows the power and confidence of Microsoft to take on not only the computer industry but also to be the newest “player” in the gaming industry that stands tall.
